The ESSLLI 2008 Site
ESSLLI 2008 will be held in the main building of the Universität
Hamburg, Edmund-Siemers-Allee 1 (ESA1). This building was donated
to the Hamburgische
Wissenschaftliche Stiftung by the Hamburg merchant Edmund Siemers and
became the main building of the university after its foundation in 1919:
In the tradition of Siemers, the west and east wing of the main
building
were
donated by Dr. Helmut and Hannelore Greve in
2002. The central location for ESSLLI 2008 will be the lobby of ESA1,
spread over two floors, where
registration and the book exhibit will be located.
The lectures will be in lecture halls C, H, J, K, M in the main
building, and the seminar
rooms W.122 and W.221 in the west wing of the main building.
The public evening
lectures will take place
in the large lecture hall ESA1.A.
We shall have an ESSLLI computer pool with workstations provided by Sun Microsystems in room W.121 in the west
wing. There is a wireless network in the entire building and all ESSLLI
participants will get a login and password for it.
The lobby of the west wing is a pleasant
indoor square with trees and a nice
cafeteria.
The main building of the university is located in the area
Rotherbaum, a lively student quarter with cafes, restaurants and
shops. The Alster is a 15 minutes walk away, the city centre of
Hamburg is also within short walking distance (10-20 minutes, depending on
where in the centre you want to go). A zoomable map with the ESSLLI Site
marked can be found on our accommodation
page.
