Abstract
The perception of rhythmic structure is fundamental to our appreciation of music. In this talk I will present a model which assumes that the way in which we perceive rhythmic structure depends crucially on our previous experiences with music. I will motivate this approach through examples of cases where perception of rhythms appears influenced by culture. After explaining the model in detail, and demonstrating how it performs, I will present some theoretical predictions on the perception of ambiguous rhythms generated by the model.
