An experiment in iterated function learning
Vanessa Ferdinand, Willem Zuidema

Abstract:
We present an iterated learning experiment with human subjects. We
introduce the framework of iterated learning, where learners learn
from data that is itself the result of a learning process. We review
one such experiment from Kalish et al. (2007), based on function
learning, where subjects learn a mapping from x to y values of an
unknown function. We then describe three small novel experiments: one
which replicates the original experiment of Kalish et al. (2007), one
which contains a novel manipulation to subject’s perception of the
task, and one which tests a population of subjects with a high degree
of mathematical training, and therefore, arguably different biases.
