Graduate Conference on the Epistemological Status of First-Person Methodology in Science, and the Metaphysics of Belief & 2nd William James Lecture by Eric Schwitzgebel, University of California at Riverside

Graduate Conference (21st - 23rd of January 2011)

There will be up to 8 papers by graduate students and post-graduates from philosophy, cognitive science and related areas, with a thematic focus on first-person methodology, knowledge about one's own consciousness, introspection, self-knowledge, and the metaphysics of belief. Talks with such thematic focus as well as talks concerning the topics of the seminars tought by Prof. Schwitzgebel (see below) are given priority, but general submission on broader topics in philosophy of mind and epistemology are welcome and will be considered. Submissions for the graduate conference should be sent electronically to safink at uos.de. We expect an abstract of 300 words and a full paper in English of less than 5000 words, including bibliography (as Word or preferably PDF-File), suitable for 45 minute presentations. After the presentation, there will be an open discussion. Authors of accepted papers will receive € 150,- to cover (part of) travel and accommodation expanses.

2nd William James Lecture 2011

We invite everyone (especially participants of the Graduate Conference) to the institute's second William James Lecture. On Thursday, 20th January 2011, 6 to 8 pm, Eric Schwitzgebel, Professor of Philosophy at Riverside (CA, USA), will give the institute's second William James Lecture entitled "Shards of Self-Knowledge". As part of the Graduate Conference, he will offer two workshops on introspection ("Experience Sampling: Tutorial and Discussion" & "The Problem of Known Illusions and the Problem of Unreportable Illusions") and one on moral behavior ("The Moral Behavior of Ethics Professors"). The conference language is English. All events are free of charge and visitors are welcomed, but please register in advance to facilitate planning. International submissions are encouraged.

Deadline: October 20th, 2010; notification of acceptance will be around December 1st.
